Benzoyl Peroxide Products for Acne – Are They Right for You?

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Benzoyl peroxide products for acne among the most popular and successful treatments including over-the-counter products such as ProActiv and Clearasil. It has been used since the 1920s when it was first developed by Jack Breitbart and the Revlon laboratories. Today is one of the most frequently used treatments for acne and, although he does have some side effects is generally well tolerated by most people. It is found in a wide range of over-the-counter preparations including lotions, gels and cleansers and also in some stronger medications that are available by prescription.

The bacteria that is responsible for outbreaks of acne is called Propionibacteria acnes and thrives in pores that are clogged by oil, dirt and dead skin cells. Overproduction of sebum that often occurs due to hormone imbalances during the teenage years attracts dirt and dust which provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. Benzoyl peroxide products work by releasing oxygen which prevents the bacteria from growing. It also cleans out the dead skin cells which helps to prevent pores becoming blocked and thus prevents the bacteria from multiplying. It does then help to prevent new breakouts and flare ups. To prevent re-occurrences of the acne, benzoyl peroxide products need to be continued even when the skin is clear, as bacteria may start to thrive and multiply again causing the acne to return.

Rosacea Skin Care Products

Rosacea sufferers frequently have easily irritated and sensitive skin so it is important to choose products for the skin that are mild and non-irritating. Any product that produces a stinging or burning sensation should be avoided. Many people have reported that products containing salicylic acid, clove oil, eucalyptus oil, menthol and peppermint have irritated their skin. Always choose rosacea skin care products that are mild and contain no ingredients that can cause irritation.

Sufferers should also use a good sunscreen as exposure to the sun can result in flare ups of the condition and they may be more susceptible to sun damage. Some sunscreens may cause irritation of the sensitive skin so in this case sunblocks containing titanium dioxide or zinc can be used instead.

Rosacea Skin Care Products
